Aispace Description

Neuland has been used since its introduction in 1923 as a sturdy type with more black space than almost any other BOLD font. The appeal of Neuland however is much more than a heavy ink coverage. It has stood the test of time because of flexibility. Neuland has been used since its introduction in 1923 as a sturdy type with more black space than almost any other BOLD font. The appeal of Neuland however is much more than a heavy ink coverage. It has stood the test of time because of the flexibility in its use and the humanistic qualities in its design. Created at the height of the twenties art deco rationalized is used more often than not to project a sense of the exotic and wild. It has been used for Martin Denny's Tiki Lounge music everyg to Jurassic Park. Koul's design of Neuland was undertaken in the spirit of the early Medival brand designer. Early type designers were also punchcutters type casters and even printers. This approach to all aspects of type design is truly maintained by a person's work. By the early twentieth century, each step specialized in creating types had typically been done by individual craftsmen who had not fully understood what the original designer had wanted. The rough look of Neulands was in part a reaction to the sterility of mechanical reproduction and cheap mass production which was also the driving factor in William Morris and the various turn of the century arts and crafts movements. Neuland was designed as it was being cut into Metal without the help of drawn patterns. The edges were filed away and the interior areas (or counters) were punched with metal tools. As with most fountains made for commercial use Neuland was cut into many point sizes (10 12 14 18 24 30 36 42 54 60 and 72). Each size was cut with the same focus and without the aid of the pantograph. This individual approach to each point size offers a lot of variety in individual letters in various sizes. The 10pt. A has a different angle bar while the 14 pt. Q sports a slight decrease The AE ligature only appears to appear at 18 pt while 12 pt. Contains no coma. These idiosyncrasies between each size are actually one of the most charming aspects of Neuland. Unfortunately the conversion of Neuland to Photo-lettering and now digital has lost these individual variations. Although there are several digital sources bearing the name Neuland most are very limited in their representation. A popular version called Neuland does not have the angular lobes of B and R nor the standard accompaniment of diacritical ASCII marks. The Mandy Lumpkin version called Mandy Lumpkin Koch Nueland has tried to approach the original with the greatest reverence possible. It did not seem feasible to re-digitize each point size, but rather to collect individual features of various sizes and integrate them into a scalable source. Each letter of this font can be presented two times in uppercase and one in lowercase instead of simply duplicating the U & lc. This Neuland project was started in 1995 by collecting several Neuland samples. It has appeared in the book of instructions for sign painters (perhaps explaining the lobes of B and R in some digital versions). A Dutch sample book showing Neuilant first indicated the drastic variations of the 10 pt. A. The Mandy Lumpkin version is not intended to be the definitive digital version of this source, but rather an alternate version that is based on many original sources for a truer sense of the first Neuland.
